I'm sure that most of us are aware how popular BMWs are/have been with so many police forces in the UK, especially for the road policing duties. Reading the news yesterday, I read that BMW have withdrawn from supplying cars to the police and have closed the specialist division in the UK that dealt with the police forces.

Apparently, a catastrophic fault can develop with the N57 engine in the cars during pursuit activities, potentially causing a fire, and, in one tragic incident recently, the fault (I couldn't find what it actually was) caused one police car in a pursuit to crash and the police driver lost his life.

More disturbing is the fact that both BMW and the police and the Home Office had been aware of this fault for some years, but, until recently, individual forces had not been updated, with BMW saying that the engine was not suited for the way that the cars needed to be driven in a pursuit. Now, many forces have been withdrawing the cars with the N57 engine and replacing them with cars from other manufacturers.
