AVI is just a shell or a wrapper around a video file, it can be encoded with an number of codecs. If the codec you use isn't on someone elses computer, they can't view the file. DIVX is good to use cause its very popular and most people have it. Plus it encodes in good quality for the file sizes that it produces.
