The Group 4 class as it was known at the time was I think called "production sports cars" for a reason. There certainly was a homologation requirement that at least 25 cars had to be built by a certain date to qualify for the Sports 5.0 class. Ford met it just because they built so many GT40s over it's production run, though the ACO and FIA didn't care if it meant road or race cars.
