I had a 3.0 S and carried several kilos of lead in the boot for the same reason. Great 'fun car' but spooky in the wet!
Also had a Lotus Cortina 'D' plate about 1970/71. It had been resprayed black but retained the dark green stripe. Remember driving it to Paris a few times on the old RN1 (before the Autoroutes were there!) and thank God it had a sump guard. Think it had a Kent reg No DKK(?)xxxD - Often wondered what happened to it?
