Yeah if they took it away not much you can do, except maybe contact them to get it back.
Shouldn't matter if it's running Linux, should still be able to connect to a Windows PC and access the hard drive. If not run up a bootable Ubuntu CD. Will just depend what file format the video files are saved in.
