As a trainee - its good to select different duties - spending time between flag and incident, as to upgrade to the next level you need to do an assessment on both flag and incident.
Don't discount the specialist roles - working in the pits, on the startline and in assembly have their own challenges and rewards. Even as you move up through the ranks of trackside marshalling, you can always sign on to do a "specialist" role.
Flagging is great, and getting the blue right is always a good feeling. but there are always those moments you kick yourself for blue-ing a pair battling for position, or missing the leader.
