They raced in front of no crowd at the Creek in August at 7am in the morning at a Supercars event. What is the difference? (other than the crews won't have to get up as early at a Shannons event)

That series has absolutely nothing to do with AGT or any other national championship, it is an SRO initiative.
There will be an Australian GT Champion crowned in 2018. Someone will run it, it will race on an event card, and will attract more cars than a Formula 4 grid, which is a national championship too after all.
