Then of course, anyone would have been able to run the Mercedes (once modified for GTD).

Not so sure about that...
Would be a shame not to see the Aston, Mercedes, McLaren or possibly a Lexus. You would think a non-IMSA GT3 endurance pilot race somewhere in the US would gather some more momentum when IMSA decides to apply the suggested manufacturers limitation.
