The Irish Republic isn't part of Great Britain, although Northern Ireland is. To discuss it anymroe would be talking about both Religion and Politics, so we'll leave it.

It's similar to the situation in football then, where a lot of English-born players represent Ireland simply due to having parents or granparents from there (in fact, I'd qualify for Ireland that way, but, trust me, the Irish soccer team can do much better). The Jamaican soccer team is almost entirely English-born as well.
