Guess you could be right about domestic needs. The Italian C.I.V.T. catered for a multitude of classes based on group A and N during the 75 period, but how classes were divided is beyond me.

The 3.0 was used at Spa '88 as mentioned earlier and I know of a pair of group N+ versions in Spain in the early 1990's. As for the 2.0, this version was used in the Dutch touring car series at the same time, also running to a group N'ish rule set. Rallyes might also have been a consideration, as a two litre break was quite common. A weight limit of 880 kg (860 kg from Jan 1988) might be a bit optimistic of the 2.0, but who knows.
