It's the same reason almost all 2WD sports cars use RWD, the accelerating wheels in RWD cars are separate from the turning wheels which mitigates understeer when accelerating out of corners. If the front wheels have to both turn and accelerate, the front tires reach their grip limits faster and cause understeer.
HOWEVER, as that Audi TT win showed FWD can have a major traction advantage in the rain. Also, interestingly, WTCC driver Charles Ng says that the FWD touring cars can accelerate out of corners faster than his RWD BMW 3-series (though he can brake later and have higher entry speed).
