Trouble with the V4 is it is basically out of balance: indeed the Ford V4 was so appalling it needed a jack shaft for balancing out the node harmonics.
Why not use a flat opposed six? Even lower frontal area.
In any case, whilst the present trend is to make cars squat (and bloody ugly!), the good old straight six enjoys excellent smooth delivery of torque. As did the old long stroke straight fours: e.g. Citroen IDs and DSs; Volvo two Litre and the engines lasted for ever...
Whereas the modern oversquare high revving high temp-lean burn lumps are noisier, particularly with ally blocks.
Same as Ginger, I very much enjoy my Beema six.
The Volvo V70 FWD works rather well: five pot and the lump sideways.
