Good question. I had always thoughts that the deal had just come together later than hoped with the eye mainly on 1990.....
However he ended up with less than half a season's racing out of it because the change to 2 litres for the smaller class for the following year made the whole project highly expensive and unfortunate. Ray was left with a car unsuitable for the 2-litre regs.
Had the Group A classes continued, that car would have cleaned up in the baby class for a few years I reckon and many many more people would've entered them!
