One thing this incident does reinforce for me is that belted-together tire barriers seem like a much better solution for crashes at steep impact angles.

When CART used to race at the trapezoid oval in Brazil in the '90s, they had belted-together tire barriers on the outside. For some reason I think there was a weird crash that made them remove them.
