Having had a quick read of the book from '91, Masings cars was new, and had only seen Eastern Creek for a race as a Sport Sedan, to sort it out.

It seems you are correct Falc, and the car was crashed in the Saturday afternoon practice session attempting to do a quick enough time to be allowed to start. I guess the time listed in Mr De Jongs website may be misleading.
