The engine isn't weak overall right now - it just struggles to nip by traffic.
If you find a way to engineer a small 2L 4 cylinder turbo charged engine to produce the same amount of torque as 6.2L V8, then you'll have a queue of customers at your door wanting some of that. Remembering that these cars are meant to be road relevant in terms of engine layout and car styling, it makes sense for the Mazda to be running the small engine they are. If they had to run a massive V8, then they wouldn't be here as it doesn't fit the Mazda philosophy. It's also why Nissan has a V6 - happens to be the same as the GTR.
