A former regular of this parish who's now sadly moved upstairs used to say that if you haven't chucked the blue away in disgust at least once in a weekend, you're not trying hard enough

In terms of role - as Dave said, you should volunteer for the thing you'd like to spend the day doing. As a trainee (and a fairly new one to boot!) you might find yourself spending the odd session here and there with the PC/flaggie on days you asked to do incident but that'll depend entirely on the people you're with and whether you want to or not.

Whatever you end up doing, enjoy yourself!
