If you finished first in the race, but were in the O3L class, you got 25pts
If you finished first in the race, but were in the U3L class, you got 30pts
If you were second in the race, but were in the O3L class, you got 23pts

If you were third in the race, but were in the O3L class, you got 20pts
If you were third in the race, but were in the U3L class, you got 24pts
and so on.... (i have the full 1983 pts structure somewhere)
Thats how, for example Allan Moffat won Rd1 in 1983 from George Fury, yet trailed Fury in the pointscore 27-25....
I'm not sure though how it applied to the three class system from 1985, nor the four class structure in 1986..... (plus we are getting off topic lol)

It makes complete sense until you try and rebuild the points structure to apply it to results! I never understood how you could have a 2 point gap from 1st to 2nd, then a 3 point gap between 2nd and 3rd / 3rd and 4th.
This is what I'd worked the three-class points structure to be, but I still don't think it's right (or makes sense):
Outright Places | Over 3L (C) | Under 3L (B) | Under 2L (A) |
---|
1st | 25 | 28 | 30 |
2nd | 23 | 26 | 27 |
3rd | 20 | 23 | 24 |
4th | 17 | 20 | 21 |
5th | 15 | 17 | 19 |
6th | 13 | 15 | 17 |
7th | 11 | 14 | 15 |
8th | 10 | 13 | 14 |
9th | 9 | 12 | 13 |
10th | 8 | 11 | 12 |
11th | 7 | 10 | 11 |
12th | 6 | 9 | 10 |
13th | 5 | 8 | 9 |
14th | 4 | 7 | 8 |
15th | 3 | 6 | 7 |
16th | 2 | 5 | 6 |
17th | 1 | 4 | 5 |
18th | | 3 | 4 |
19th | | 2 | 3 |
20th | | 1 | 2 |
I think Falcadore would have a much better grasp of this than I do. One day I wouldn't mind going back and trying to work it out again. Or perhaps just buying the relevant CAMS manual.
Oh, and
four class structure? What were the classes? Under 1600cc, 1601-2000cc, 2001-3000cc, Over 3000cc? The second class would only cater for the Gazelle, the Gemini and Mike Freeman's old RA60 Celica.
