Actually your right, it was a 3-class structure in 1986... not sure what made me think it was a 4-class structure that year.

According to an early '86 edition of AA though, there was a late change to the class system, solely to keep Alfa Romeo involved.

CAMS wanted to keep the 2000-3000cc and O3L classes that had been in place in 1985, however Alfa had, for some reason, been under the impression the FISA Group A classes would be adopted and threatened to pull out if these weren't put in place.

The classes ended up being 0-2500cc, 2501cc-3000cc, and over 3000cc

It left the likes of the Alfa's & 325i's in the 0-2500cc class, with the Volvo's & Starions in the middle class.

This may have changed by the time the championship came around though, given that the 2L championship was introduced.


RE: the points system, confusing as it was, at least we never awarded the series to the wrong person, like what happened in the '86 ETCC...
