Revvedup, I actually live in a city, (well what's called a city up here, with 70000 people,) so people go everywhere they need to by bike in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Actually it's quite common to see families bring home their grocery shopping on a sled!
But yes you are right, people who travel more tend to have 4x4s, mostly Nissan Qashqais and Pathfinders. I'm not sure why those are the favourites but they certainly survive the mountains in 24 darkness, I know the little Aygo I passed my test in in England wouldn't stand a chance
