Sad but true. Most, not all, of the Escorts are Mickey Mouse or have become something rather better than they were in period and built using the homologation menu to extract the maximum advantage. If they actually insisted on real cars prepared as they were in the actual year they raced, then I think the grid would be far more representative of the class structure.
But this is not a new concept surely, each category "dumbs down" to a degree as competitors work out which cars are competitive in each class, are cheap and practical to build (or restore) and give the best bang for their buck?
The final part is the critical mass theory, when you get a good number of one type of car then by default that car wins more often so newcomers tend to buy that car which increases the numbers which in turn win more often.......
