They can stop you making copies and selling them as such, refer to some of the court cases around selling bodies for speedway cars, but they can't stop you converting or modifying a road car for racing.
I am aware of any action against builders of sport sedans by the manufacturers of the car the sport sedan pretends to represent. Maybe the higher profile of Supercars could attract some negative reaction from some manufacturers.
