Petch etc started the study and research then split and started their own venture using what they had learned whilst working for others.
Remember the issues with V8 supercars and supertourers early on when the ST tried to steal their aero designs? and then had to suddenly backtrack and change them and say they never intended to run them at all? All part of that.
