True, but the VFL was a long time ago (West Coast Eagles established in 1986) and where would it be now if it wasn't now national as the AFL?
In any case, football is like a religion in Victoria and has absolute blanket coverage, probably like nowhere else in the world for any sport so it is hardly a fair, real-world comparison.
The advantage of being national is that sponsors can involve clients and staff in several states, not just one, which makes it a better sell.
