This is a pet peeve of mine.
"Next-gen" means a generation that isn't here yet. Right now, that means consoles several years down the road. PS4 and One are current-gen, because they're currently here and have been for nearly a year. Wii U counts, too, but I don't normally bother mentioning it because it doesn't matter. I've seen the term "new-gen" before, and I'm fine with that as it acknowledges that these are recent releases that most players don't yet have. They just can't be "next" because that means "after what is here now" but PS4 and One are here already.
