They had to pit Kimi because Bottas and the others pitted. Since the gap came down, if Bottas was fast on new tyres he'd have leaped both for the lead. As it turned out, Bottas wasn't fast but they didn't know that at the time. When Vettel put in purple and green sectors in clean air, they knew he could stay out. Kimi also got stuffed with traffic, but they had to do it to cover Bottas.
Sometimes pitting early is an advantage. Today it wasn't. But had Bottas and the Red Bulls been fast then it would've worked out a different way and Kimi would've won.
