That is exactly why it was banned in speed events I am afraid, for exactly that reason
Less of an issue in rallycross because at speed events often the paddock and crossovers and people are stood fairly close to the cars as they approach the start line. So when they spin tyres there are people close by behind the car.
And something like a 600hp Gould warming its tyres up can chuck grit and stones quite far and at quite some speed,
Imagine being stood behind a rallycross car 10 metres away when it does a warm up start.
