From memory the A-1 Ring was the original chosen venue but the event never took place. I don't think it ever got close to having an entry list, even a provisional one.
For 1997, the FIA had a manufacturer 'World Cup' award with points scored based on results in other series - Australia, Belgium, Central Europe, Germany, GB, Italy, North America, South America, South-East Asia and Sweden. BMW scored most points, primarily because they were represented in more series than anyone else, although I doubt anyone actually cared.
