Corvettes also had a transaxle gearbox back then (and had since '01) which is probably why the starter was mounted there. Of course, the ACO officials didn't like what they were trying to do and made them stop the car.
BTW, anyone know or think anyone's running DOD on current prototype or GT engines? I haven't heard of its use since a decade ago when Corvette tried it and gave up on it after LM.
