Alex E should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
JPS M3`s

Some info that might help to distinguish the different cars.

It is correct that the factory shells were numbered M3-1-###. but the first 35 bodies were not numbered that way, but instead were hand stamped in a different place.
Regarding the air-jacks, from the start all M3 Gp A bodies had the air-jacks outside the wheelbase, this was the case until the updating of the bodies to allow 18" wheels to be used from the start of 1990. The only exception was that from the start of `89 Schnitzer moved them inside the wheelbase.
So any cars you see pre `89 racing in ATCC with air-jack within the wheelbase must be cars built by an individual team. Frank Gardner only bought one new M3 kit from BMW Motorsport & that was in `87, so the car with air-jacks outside the wheelbase you mention was probably this car. I have the chassis number. Seems possible that Gardner bought one factory car & used that as a reference to build the others from road bodies ??
I have some pictures of the art cars somewhere, will try to find them.
