No, that's what puzzles me as well- As I recall most of the 'newcomers' to the BTCC around that time tended to be graduating from Prodsaloons or had a background in one of the various national/club tintop series. The closest I can think of to a driver 'appearing out of the blue' was Jerry Mahony who arrived in the BTCC in 1988 after a single season in Prodsaloons- and as I recall hadn't done much, if anything, before his Prodsaloon debut in '87

I half-wondered if Hilton might have been one of the various short oval guys who tended to turn up in Thundersaloons etc around that time, but the name still doesn't ring any bells with me
