Goodyear to return by 2003
This weeks Autosport has stated that Goodyear look likely to return to F1 possibly as early as next year, following initial alks with some of the teams in Austria. What would a three way tyre do to lap times?

Next year being 2002, of course.
If Bridgestone remains (which they won't should GY join) that would make it a THREE way tyre war. Lap times should fall, depending upon the manufacturer's commitment to F1. I could see Ferrari returning to GY's |

Autosport say that the earliest likely entry would be 2003 yet 2002 entry may be possible as BAR, Jordan, Sauber, Prost and Minardi all have their tyre contracts up at the end of this year. There is no mention of this minimum notice time.

It has been noted on another thread, the difficulty Bridgestone is in with regards to the Firestone tire problem, and the costs associated with retooling, lawsuits, loss of goodwill, etc. Perhaps they are going to focus on their CART efforts.
On the other hand, it may cost less to equip fewer teams, so that could allow them to stay. Either way, more competition is a good thing. |

I thought I made a post about this last week?
The head of Goodyear racing was in Austria to gather info. All the bigwigs at Goodyear regret pulling out of F1. Bridgestone may be near the end of its F1 involvement. etc., etc. Where were you guys? |

What was the point in leaving only to come back this early?

Goodyear said when they quit that they had acheived everything they felt they could in F1. Since then their sales have plumeted apparently and they think another go in top flight motor sport might level out the bank balance a little.

I certainly hope Goodyear come back. Imagine the tyres wars that would results from that. Lap Times would be incredible!
