2017 Philip Island Classic, 17-19 March
The event is only a couple of weeks away, see a summary in the press release below. There are a number of Ford Sierras running to mark the 30th anniversary of the RS500. Meanwhile in the same races event Patron John Bowe will be reunited with a Volvo 240 Turbo and Jim Richards will be racing a BMW 635.
Sierras include: No. 8 Colin Bond Caltex car No. 18 the last one constructed by DJR No. 20 Tony Longhurst B&H, 1988 Bathurst 1000 winner No. 30 Glenn Seton Peter Jackson car, to be driven by Glenn No. 85 Brian Sala Tyrepower car, to be driven by Brian Another highlight should be a pair of ERA's (R5B, R10B); I still remember the sound of the three ERA's that ran 10+ years ago. I'm still to work out whether I will go on Saturday, Sunday or both, but it is an event I always look forward to. There are a number of UK & USA entries - anyone from here? http://vhrr.com/phillip-island/ PRESS RELEASE International Cars Set to Dazzle Crowds at 2017 Phillip Island Classic Historic Race With high levels of interest from UK and European motor racing enthusiasts and owners of cars with international motor sport provenance, the 2017 event at Phillip Island will live on as one of the most important motor race events in the world of historic racing. Recognised in the International Historic Motoring Awards in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and short listed in the top ten historic motor sport events in the world on other occasions, the Phillip Island Classic is now well established on the international calendar attracting priceless cars that have raced on the world’s most famous racing circuits, driven by some of the legends of motor racing. “The Patron for the 2017 event at Phillip Island was recently announced as Dick Johnson but due to overseas commitments this role has now been filled by another legend of Australian Motor Sport, 40 year veteran John Bowe,” said Ian Tate, Chairman of the VHRR Organising Committee. “John has partnered with Dick on many occasions and the pair won Bathurst together in a Sierra on 1989,” he said. With more than 500 entries and record crowds expected, the 2017 event will have a strong representation of production touring cars Group N, and Group C & A cars. Of particular importance will be the 30th anniversary celebration marking the 1st win in the world for a Ford Sierra with Dick Johnson at the wheel in Australia. To mark the occasion it is expected that there will be up to ten Sierra’s racing at Phillip Island next year. The spectacular Group JK & LB sports and racing cars with a competition history prior to the end of 1960 also create great interest from spectators at this exciting motor sport event. Event Patron John Bowe will also be racing at Phillip Island over that weekend. |

Hi John,
There 15 cars in the 3 containers from the UK, which are over with you already! Including the ERAs. I will be out with a Cooper T53 and we have a relatively wide spectrum of other cars! We are looking forward to some sun.... Will |

The RHD '88 Bathurst winner is #25, and is still sitting in the Bathurst Motor Museum..
Presumably the Longhurst Sierra in question is one of the ex-Wolf LHD cars |

It's the last one built by the Longhurst Team in mid 1990 doing a handfull of races before team switched to BMW 'S in 1991. The car was bought and run by Brian Bolwell a few times in 1991.

Thanks for the correction on the Sierra. Will, I don't think sun will be a problem on the weekend, the weather prediction is for 30°C or so and sunny! Having said that, it will probably rain now...

No matter what the weather prediction if you don't go to Phillip Island for the Classic with wet weather tyres (and gear) Murphy's Law will strike.....

NA contingent
I will be there with the Dreossi Special FJr when the container shows up. It was delayed leaving NZ and is now in Customs. Also in the container are: JR's Lotus 18, Travis' Chevron and Ralt RT1, Bruce's Brabham w/Waggott motor. It is raining at the moment, so the test day will at least partly be wet.

The container has been cleared and will be at the track by 6:30am. So qualifying will be the first view of the track.
