Alonso: F1 peaked in 2000s
http://www.autosport.com/news/report...d-in-the-2000s
Great to see strong opinions - and actually agree - though the early 90's were pretty interesting too. The cars / paint jobs / engines etc made it rather magical to go and watch live. |

I think from a manufacturer involvement point of view, that can't be argued, however I think from a "show" point of view, either 2001 or 2003 would have to be the best years for me. 3-5 teams winning races and certainly in the case of 2003 a geniune 3 horse race for the title until near the end.

Although it had it's moments, I wouldn't look back on the early to mid 00s too favourably. Grooved tyres, too many winglets, only about 20 cars on the grid, too much Schumacher dominating and refuelling took away from the action on the track.
That said the tyre war could mix things up and the no tyre change rule in 05 made races more fun to watch, especially in the closing laps. Certainly better than multiple tyre stops |

I think it peaked in the 90s. When we had slick tyres, wider cars and varied engines.

I am probably showing my age here but i would have to say late 70's early 80's, the Turbo crossover period, 82 being the prime example, you have to go some to beat nine different winners in nine consecutive races.

Formula One was in a bubble during the 2000s, that burst when the global credit crunch took place. Meanwhile, the 2002 season was the last one with pure racing, despite the existence of refueling. In 2003, the post-qualifying parc fermé was introduced - the first piece of legislation the foresaw in an enforced durability as well as a homologation. Since then, things only got worse.

I found 1986 the most spectacular year - something to do with 1000bhp monsters attacking Brands Hatch. Loved the Hunt/Lauda years , and the early n/a cars from 89- mid 90s were just glorious - far, far better than those buzzy little V8s which preceded the current era. For sheer hairs on back of neck moments the 71 Matra V12 and 1990ish V12 Ferraris and Lamborghinis sounded utterly wonderful

I'm biased because I grew up with it but the V8/V10/V12 era in the 90's with nice, short but wide cars, wide tyres and great tobacco liveries cannot be beaten.
I'm rewatching 1994 and aside from the morbid curiosity of the whole season, the cars look so damn good. |

Any time from the 80s was fun to watch, as was the 90s before the groove tyres came in
