seems to be a lot of new cars being built. From what ive heard sports sedan grid numbers will grow to a healthy size over the next couple of years.

You arnt allowed to have a rear engined car even if it come from the factory that way. But you can run a front engined porsche.

Dean has been building a new SAAB, underneath very similar to hossacks car.

Dean has been building a new car to keep up with Hossack's Audi (what a weapon) which should debut this season.

The Porsche's are too fast -- so like all categories the existing owners are very defensive about their patch .

Yes, it used to smack them-- hence they banned Porsche ever since.

Yep - it was when the GT and Sports Sedans were run as one championship (now, that's an idea).

The 935s were run as GT cars, not sports sedans.

935 spanked them (did have the just returned from F1 former world champion driving of course). Even Rusty French managed to get his up near the front at times so they were a very quick thing by the standard of the day.

Well there would be nothing for them to worry about then would there.Certainly the front running SS are fantastic cars but they fall away fairly quickly outside the top few of the top National cars .At state level I would have my money on a Porsche.

I remember Peter Fizgerald used to run a Porsche S/S at Amaroo bank in the 80's.

Spanked them? Don't you remember a certain Monza with a Aussie touring car standout aboard, sailing past that former F1 legend in his own lunch on the back straight of Sandown, like the blown beetle was nailed to the horse railing!

Only vaguely tbh (long time ago now of course) - some sort of mech fault in the beetle as I recall.

No Sandown round in the series though (may have been a non championship thing) and the beetle clean sweeped the series - won every round.

Personally, I preferred the Monza as a machine at the time - still do but the beetle spanked them in the series - winning every round could only be described that way to my way of thinking.

Do the cars that the Sports Sedans are based on still need to be classed as a 'touring car'??

Wasn't a Montorosso proposal for an MR2 body a few years back rejected on these grounds? If so, how does an Aston Martin fit?

When did they invent the idea of excluding the rear engined Porsche?

In the late-70s the Porsche's were moved from Sports Sedans into Production Sports Cars, when they Australian Sportscar Championship moved to these regs.

In 1982 when the Sports Sedan Championship became a GT Championship (and the ASCC was run for Group A Sportscars, not production sportscars) they were allowed to compete as they were classed as GT cars. Circa-1986 the GT racing went back to being Sports Sedan racing (though there was no national title)

Not in NSW if Scott Butler was running. He was in the top 5 in 08 at Oran Park. One very quick car and still plenty of development. The Jackson Calibra and McCready 300ZX are also top NSW State competitors who I would think 7/10 would come out on top of a Porsche (the other 3 races would be DNF's due to mechanical failures, after all they are Sports Sedans....)..

In Vic a Porsche's wouldn't go to bad but in the next year or two the cars will get a lot faster with a big batch of quality new cars coming through.

You a making the incorrect presumption that GT2 could not be competetive.Porsche reliability and consistency with speed thereabouts would see it with a chance. It is the dumbness of our contrived categories that prevents cross entering -it would add interest to the racing.
