Yeah, before this turns into the Nissan thread. All we have to say now fits in the season thread.

Hell, I'll start one right now! With the rumours of DPI and LMP1 sharing the same basic rules for 2020, could this be incentive enough for Porsche to come back and try to do what they did in the 80's? |

I hope they get in f1. They have a budget for it, might as well! If the new rules on engines are easier then maybe one day they'll rejoin lmp1 if they can make a nice image for themselves there.

Toyota have attended some of the same meetings just for the record. If the costs are brought down in F1, and engine supply is made easier, maybe that might hopefully have a similar impact on LMP1.

Lots of manufacturers attend these meetings, not just car manufacturers either. But Todt says he sees no serious interest in teams wanting to join f1. So it looks like Porsche will just try their luck with an engine supply.

If Porsche see more value in having an engine in F1, over an entire team (and 100% credit for it) in WEC, it shows how badly marketed WEC has been. F1 engines could be stickers for all the public knows, and that's worth more than continuing the 919 project.

And we have to remember that because of dieselgate and trying to save face over it, programs were being looked at as far as ROI viability and success vs dollars/euros spent.
The Audi Sport program was axed because of diesel engine marketing being made redundant, going to a gasoline engine being redundant, and winning only two races a season each year since 2014, and LM only being among them once. Same deal with Porsche. They said that LM was the only round that the WEC had as far as making it worth it as far as their time and money. The ALMS in it's early years marketed itself better than the WEC has been. |

There's their FE programme as well, there's good marketing potential there.

The moral of the story is that ACO can't hype worth crap in the modern era.

Or like Panoz after '06 with the ALMS and relied on OEMs to the job for his marketing department. Grand Am relied on NASCAR and ISC to do that job for them, too.

Might there be another reason for Porsche pulling the WEC team than going to FE?

Congratulations Porsche. That was a much tougher fight than in Mexico.

For me, a disappointing result, but good to see a closer battle.

For those who don't like team orders, I have bad news, irrespective of my own views on it:
1: the practice has been around forever basically in motorsport, 2: Porsche will probably keep doing it until the #8 Toyota is out of it for the drivers' title, 3: This is what happens when LM is double points, the ACO say you can't get points at LM or any other WEC round unless you run 70% distance and do the last lap in less than a set time, 4: This makes Toyota dropping the ball at LM all the more regrettable, 5: I think a lot of us are spoiled by teams like Joest, Champion and Corvette Racing letting their drivers/teams race each other almost all the time in the ALMS and such. However, even the Audi teams (though rarely) used team orders, like Nurburgring in '08 and PLM the same year, mostly after the lack of at least temporary team orders cost them a race at Road America in '07. Annoying though it may be, most attempts to ban or restrict team orders--much like cost control--have been failures. And since multicar teams in road racing aren't like Indy Car or NASCAR (where each team has their own sponsors), you're going to get more team orders stuff. And it's not like Toyota aren't guilty of it either, since the #8 is in damage control mode after LM imploded on the team. |

I'm afraid it's that time of season when we have to be prepared for team orders, so we have to just let em get on with it

Lotterer moving on to FE next year. Yikes, what a step-down for him.

About the only thing VAG has for him outside of GT3 racing for Audi Sport, Porsche, Bentley or Lamborghini.
