Haven't been able to find a suitable series yet, which is gutting. Public races are ok but more often than not I'm getting punted off by some bellend.

Try googling the ''GPL 2004 Demo'', it comes with all the latest graphical patches, all of the cars and Watkins Glen. You can add on tracks and mods to it.

I have the 1969 cars, the Thundercars and the 1967 Sportscar mods, as well as plrenty of great tracks from the GPL track database!

The CD is available, but you have to look for it these days. The updates -

This is the alternative track database, with links to virtually all the tracks currently available for GPL.

The Targa Florio track is superb, as is Jim Pearson's abridged Isle Of Man TT track (he is slowly beavering away at the Full circuit...)

Yuk, now I remember why I never liked it the first time around!

Obviously an acquired taste, I managed about a half a lap before uninstalling it, total garbage for me Im afraid!!

It's a proper sim that isn't really pick up and play. You have to work at it.

To me it's the greatest way to learn car control. I'm still using the techniques I learned driving GPL to this day, particularly throttle and brake control.

It certainly made getting used to the rFactor F1 '92 mod much easier!

Weird, you cant calibrate the controller properly on that demo, maybe you can get plug ins for the G25, but I couldnt use the H pattern?

Just felt awful, no feeling and just as I remember why I didn't like it all those years ago! I had just forgotten!!

RF is obviously a million miles better with new tech, but the wheel feels awul in GPL for me, I couldn't really change much to alter it.

As with most sims there is an ini file which I believe in GPL is called 'Core.ini'. Google seems to come up with multiple hits on which settings you can try for the G25 as well as other steering wheels.

As for the H Shift issue there is a program called GPL Shift which is still being actively developed and can be found here: http://www.gplshift.dk/GPLshift/index.htm

Ahhh GPL. Haven't played that for years. Was reasonably handy at it at the time but agree it wasn't a "pickup and play" kind of sim. Took a few weeks to get the hang of and then months to perfect and be consistant. Used to be great fun though - remember GPLRank I think it was - good for comparing laptimes to friends and world records etc.

Daren't install it again now though, I'd be awful! I'm more into rFactor. The F1 91 and 92 are particularly good. iRacing is really good too, again takes patience but it's good, shame it costs as don't have the time to get the value out of it.

Are there any new rFactor mods/tracks I should be checking out?

Still the best in my opinion - and by a considerable margin. Everything else is way to easy to drive. It took me about a year of practising GPL to be good enough to even beat the middle-ranking AI......

I have to be honest, in the version I tried the other week the game felt very very different to any other sim I have played.

THe FFB was awful, almost non existent and the feeling from the wheel was all completely wrong.

Other sims like Iracing, Netkarpro etc are far easier to get on with, though not as deep perhaps.

It all comes back to feel, I guess it's to do with evolution of wheels, FFB and stuff and yu could perhaps get GPL to feel better. But I am quite happy leaving it wher it is! Off my hard drive!!

Yeh feel is so important. So many mods on rFactor just don't "feel" good. Having said that when I played GPL back in the day I had an old MS Sidewinder wheel which didn't have Force Feedback and compared to my current F430 wheel was utter cack. Maybe I will fish out the disc, reinstall, patch & mod and see how it "feels" now. I'll be way off the pace though

For accessible racing I seriously rate rfactor - if only for the sheer variety. Some mods are better than others but there is a lot of fun to be had.

For instance (as I know there are quite a few rallycross fans on this board) the other night we had the cars from the historic touring car mod on madcowie's rallycross tracks. Who would have imagined that there would ever be a sim for minicross racing at Blyton??? Or that you could race historic Escorts, Capris, Cortinas, 911s at Lydden Hill? Not to mention Sierras, Volvos and Group B cars...

Well worth a look if you haven't got it.
