It says so on the ticket; it is dangerous; not only to you, also to those around you. If one is aware of the history of said tyres, as per Al's example a vastley different scenario. Cost may induce their further use, but tread warily, a good scrub, close inspection of walls, and pressure drop test. if any doub't plan B and council bin best option.

Personally Simon? NO and I would argue tooth and nail with any driver/owner whose car I had under my charge against doing so to the point of a disclaimer being signed if insisted upon. Repeat prescription, bin em. PS and the rims if five years old they are also out of NDT certificate.

Perhaps I shouldn't have started the thread with the word 'old' because I think I'm giving the wrong impression. They are in excellent nick and are soft with no visible damage of any sort. I'll get in touch with the previous owner (he is a very genuine guy) and get more info on them and see what he says. I'll also check the code on the tyre while its daylights and I'll ask the fella who has done the prep on the car to have a look at them too (they aren't on the car so he's not seen them) - he'll be honest with me. Genuinely, they look mint but I wanted to get people's opinions as I recognise the importance of them being right. Seriously, if I'm in any doubt I certainly won't take any risks with me, let alone anyone else around me. If they aren't good I'll just have to wait and buy some later this year, end of argument. Having driven a Mk1 Escort on 'apparently good' but actually 'old and hard' tyres as a student I know first hand what can happen. |

It basically an age thing and if they are old dump them.
They deteriorate with age and it can be a very expensive way to save money. Think the longest we keep tyres on race cars is 3/4 years old and then dispose of them as you cannot detect deterioration solely by inspection. |

Years ago a friend ran his recently restored Lotus 23B on the set of tyres he'd used prior to restoration.
The resulting trip into the barriers cost rather more than he'd saved by not fitting new tyres. |
