So, who is this 12 year-old kid? He sure looks 12 in this pic: http://www.skipbarber.com/photoLib/full/4098.jpg

Considering how insurance works here in the US, I am amazed that he got in the car. Like they say "smoke 'em if you got them"

Absolutley ridiculous age to move to cars should be 16 at least most places in the world you have to be 17 to even get a drivers licence for the roads.I believe there was a 15 year old kid killed in NZ Formula Fords a couple of months back, first death in Formula Ford in that country since it started im told.

I too am completely amazed he got in the car at age 12. I would imagine that the track insurance or the Skipy insurance would never allow it. But, I guess they did. I called the Skip Barber people to see if he really was only 12 (he could have been 15 & looked 12), and sure enough the guy I talked with confirmed it. Unf***ing believable!

Personally, I think it's wrong, 12 is way too young to be racing 135 mph race cars. Testing in a private test on a clear track, maybe (like a lot of Brazilians do), if he had a sh*t load of karting. But racing wheel to wheel in an actual Formula car race? F*** no!!!!!!

If I were racing against him, I would ask the dad for a blank check or have the Barber people guarantee something, because I would surely be p*ssed off if this kid took me out doing something stupid. But at the end of the day, it's the parents call, right? Whatever, if he makes it to F1; ten years from now, 18 will be considered too old....I assume the dad is the guy in that pic with him in the similar suit.

I used to think a good rule of thumb for retirement from sports is when your competitors are 10 years younger than you...

Being small is a bonus in a single-seater! If he's strong enough for a 2stroke Kart he is strong enough for a single seater.

I think that the problem is more to do with mental maturity, a kid do not understand danger, and putting others in danger, you get that perspective with age. Maybe he has that.

Weight is an interesting point. Skippy cars don't have much power so he would have a good advantage over a guy that weighs 180lbs.

Surely you can't drive F3 cars when you're only 13?

I biased, but he is remarkable for his maturity,,,,,and he's been racing cars for nearly a year. He's driven the Skip Barber Regionals, Nationals, the Formula BMW car, and the Formula Renault 1600 and 2000 cars - the later of which was his favorite by far.

Yes for now, but what if the red bull thing doesn't work out? Then what's he going to do? If no-one is prepared to insure him, then what'll happen?
Did you actually manage to find someone to sponsor him in the skips anyway?
