Thanks for the reminder EP, I like the effect and will remember that. Quote:
Once I have had written confirmation from a scrutineer that there is no petrol or petrol vapour in the car and that all and any batteries have indeed been removed, then I might think that it was not worth while turning off the master switch. But I'd probably still do it as it is just a sensible habit. Regards Jim Last edited by JimW; 27 Jul 2005 at 09:46. Reason: Syntax and second thoughts. |

Well we did have one case in the Park a few years ago where there was much giving out over marshals who hadn't pulled the electrics on a specific car. The response was "well we thought the battery was pretty well isolated - you see that big thing in the middle of the road over there? The one the fire marshal nearly tripped over while attending the incident? Well that's the battery"

I have a mantra I recite to the driver on those rare occasions when moi (fat git marshal carrying bottle) gets to an incident first.
"Turn off electrics" "Put gear in neutral" "Don't go wandering off" It seems to work most times. However if the incident is more than about 5 yards from where I'm picking my nose the first thing I see is "super-marshal", sans cape and bottle, flying past me at light-speed trying to impress the X-Observer. So I don't get much chance to discuss the relative merits of steering wheel paddle changing with the driver until I turn up with 20Kg of bottle under my armpit, by which time the medics have already removed the battery from said driver's rear orifice and my younger team-mates have rebuilt the tyre wall, swept the track and are having a quick buttie. Still, I plod on. |

Send him back to do it properly.
One odd experience a few years ago. Single seater, possibly F3. We pulled the electrics and they were definitely off - the red light on the back went out. The electronic dash, however, didn't. We only noticed when we went back at the end of the session. The driver's answer was that he'd lose the data logging if it went off, so they'd wired around the cut-off... |

This is sadly very true Wooley. Maybe though the driver/team ought to think about what they want back, the data or the whole car untouched by fire. |

Similar incident yesterday at Oulton. Car hit the wall hard at Deer Leap, driver got out and i asked if the electrics were off, to which i got a definate yes. Session was stopped, we went out to sort the car and i noticed the dash was still on. Asked the driver if the dash is always on went the electrics are killed, and he said "oh, sorry the switch is over there"...
...always ask the driver to turn them off, but never trust them to actually do so - always check yourself. |

I had a similar one yesterday....... 'Are the electrics off?' 'Yes.' 'No they aren't - the lights are still on!' .....that ended his little tantrum about my decision not to try to push his car out of the gravel trap! |

ive had similar experiences to this in my first year...worst one was last year at the gold cup...a 1970s f2 car...asked if it was off, he said yes and i heard a hissing,...fuel pump was still on, so went to shut it off and couldnt find the cut off, at the end of the session went again and it was burried inside the cockpit behind the shifter with no sign to say where it was....bloody good scrutineering eh!

Same thing at Spa yesterday with the WTCC. One lap after the safety car had picked-up the pack a stranded car was seen (in the middle of the "Bus-Stop") with it's wipers still going and no-one in attendance!!

true, although not sure where the cutoff for that car is. I'm guessing the kill switch is on the bonnet under the windscreen, and maybe the driver had other things on his mind....
...some great pics in that thread tho, but what was Mark looking for?!!! |

I did have car pull up on post at Donington Park, the woman driver got out and climbed over the wall.
We went to shift it to a safer location and found the steering wheel had locked. When the driver saw us struggling with the car she called out "do you need this?" and held up the car key. we had to fetch the key off from her and turn the ignition on before we could steer the car. Needless to say we were unimpressed and asked the CofC to get the Chief Scrutineer to permantly disable the steering lock as required by the regulations. |

I think it was last year at Loton Park a chap went sideways into a tyre wall. The drivers side was against the tyres.
The Rescue unit were called and on arrival i despatched someone to get in the car with the driver via the passenger door. The door was locked!!!!! It hadn't happened as a result of the shunt he'd locked it in the paddock. Luckily the driver was ok and opened the door and struggled out. When we escorted the chap back to the paddock i showed him our "set of hydraulic keys" He wont do that again. |

And how often have we been out to a car in the gravel, only to find that the driver has thoughtfully applied the handbrake?
