Do you have some spec of the car?
In Belgium there are a few MR2's in rallycross, also the MK1 model as yours.
Yes I bought the car in 2005 and raced it in 2006 - 2007 in Revivals Rallycross. I know Tony Bell raced the car in the late 80's (he confirmed it was his and he shared a few stories when he raced it) and I saw Andrew Scott race the car in the late 90's. The car was then used in hillclimbs and made its way to Scotland.

I bought the car as a non runner (well it was running but not very well) and the car was given to Richard Wakeling at Revivals, but I never had the money or time to fully invest in the car. I will check for the spec but it run a 1600cc on twin 48 carbs and produced 180bhp.

As for Belgium I know BSL Rallycross had 2 MR2s that raced in Belgium with Marco van Ratingen one of the drivers I think. These MR2s actually run the 20v 1600cc.

Graham not all MR2's are T-bars as my track day car was a coupe, but you are right the Rallycross car had a fibreglass roof.

Was the car actually disqualified ?

No rx-guru I believe this was built in Finland, there is a link on the internet showing the build. My car went to Jouko Hakkinen. It was converted from right hand dive to left hand drive and now has a Honda Type R engine.

From FIA Rallycross rules: "Cars must be rigidly-closed non-convertible models."

This rule is nearly 40 years old now and came into force for 1973.

Interesting. Didn't the Fiat X-19 race in Europe. That car had a removable roof.

My MR2 roof was not removable.

Yep, the Fiat X1/9 did RX in different European countries. Belgian Eddy Colanbeen for example was pretty fast with his X1/9 in the up to 1600cc category. But I do not remember any more if he (or others) raced his car in ERC rounds too nor if the Targa roof was rigidly fixed to the body and, thereby, legal or run under a waiver.

IIRC it was only on for one year. The 1980 Innocenti 120L Rallycross Cup was won by Dutch driving/racing instructor Ed Eliasar and runner-up became Dutch Bose HiFi CEO Niek Merks, who later went to the Bose headquarters in the US.

Graham, I only got the 1980 final point standings in my RX Yearbook 1981. Among the 14 drivers mentioned there is no GS and no non-Dutch driver anyway. Possibly they did it one more year – with you… Or you have been a guest driver without points for the cup…

However, got you in the same book as 16th overall of the Dutch Rallycross Cup for Foreign Drivers with BL Mini.

I digged my 'Rallycross - Regelemente-Tuning-Rijkunst' by Jan Roodenkerk up from the attic. (Rules - tuning - the art of driving)
ISBN 90 6127 071 5 , 1973 Peters' Uitgeversmij. b.v. Deventer.

Some cars in it:
NSU 1000 C / L
Lola T210 C (Anton v.d. Kamp)
DAF with a 'Oldsmobile' 375 bhp engine
Mini with a 4.2 liter (4200cc) engine #106 'Maris's Mini's' sponsoring?
Franz Pickel's Mercedes is in it, looks a bit more modded then only some tape over the headlamps
Alpine A110 driver called H. Neger?, other A110 David Angel and I remeber others too..
'Speedy Duck' A very fast 2cv by Pieter v.d. Molen
Lotus Europa Bart Rietbergen
