Anyone tried one of these

http://www.performancebox.co.uk

or the drifting version..

http://www.driftbox.com/

We had one of the latter on the 2CV I raced at the 24h - I believe we logged the entire race. The ability to overlay each drivers times was very interesting, showing were people were faster or slower.

It's not as sophisticated at one with sensors attached to everything (GPS only), but is it still worth the cash?

Realtive to what they do, the software etc... the Performance Box is not good value for money (I feel). At least for Race use, where you will eventually want to hook in other sensors.

For track day use however it's definately fine.

In Locost racing, data logging with the use of anything bar GPS is illegal, so would be a good fit for that I guess.

I haven't seen the DL1 software, so am not able to comment on it, but the Driftbox stuff seemed OK. If the data formats are published you could always write your own!

Writing your own software is pretty extreme at club level - the file formats aren't publicly documented from my own previous searches either, although some tools will do conversions for you.

EDIT:

Correction - Just re-read the 750MC locost regs

http://www.750mc.co.uk/images/upload...-2008-regs.pdf

No sensors seems an odd restriction - any ideas why this has been done?

Possibly to keep costs down.

Thought had crossed my mind - still, it's a non-competitive part (in at least as it won't make the car go faster, only tell you where you are going slower)... not in the same league as buying new tires every 5 minutes

re: Locost.

I believe it is to keep the costs down. And I only one use set of tyres/season, if that!!

Interesting point about it not being a competitive part.

I like the look of the DL1, but its a bit too much for my limited budget.

If you can't use the sensors then I agree, the DL1 isn't as good a spend.

As for tires, yeah I'm still on my first set of the season - then again, I'm slow

Hi,

I am looking to get a datalogger in the near future and have read th entire thread whcih seems to point me in the direction of the DL1. stack or aim. I know the stack datalogger as the predictive lap feature do either of the others have this?

TIA

The Racepak IQ3 has predictive lap timing. I think the Dash2 does too, but less elegantly.

Don't know about Stack or AIM as I'm not interested in their products.

ive had experience with a few systems, MoTec works the best for me. the cheaper pi systems feel limited as to what you can do, whereas MoTec is more versatile but simpler to use. ive also seen a few budget systems that are good value, it seems you get what you pay for within reason

any datalogging system will work with the Pi monster beacon thats installed at all uk circuits, just make sure the beacon is configured to the Pi channel (channel 14)

Thinking of going for the Stack St8600 and then later buying a data aquistion system to suit. Has anyone used one of these before i know they are specifically made for formula cars but i think it will look ok in the westfield.

Regards

I think, the problem with the STACK software is that some features are not standard, ergo you have to buy a math package ore some other features for the DataPro software.
This is something I do not really like.

I am surprised by the comment above. The STACK system comes complete with all functionality, but it has to be unlocked using a pin code. The benefit to this is you can upgrade the unit without sending it back as you get more and more comfortable with datalogging. From the STACK point of view, it has allowed the reduction in price, since we are not building one offs to order, but a whole load exactly the same.

I do not have any problem with the unlocking function for some hardware features, but I can not really understand why I have to bother with unlocking some, from my point of view, basic feature like math chanells in DataPro.

But I see you are talking like an insider - could you please provide me the manual of the 8910G display with he wiring schematic of the display connector.
Thank you.

In my experience this is the problem with the attitude that software should be free. So called "basic" features like maths channels don't write themselves into the software; they're actually extremely complex and take talented (and expensive) software engineers to develop. Take a certain data product I am quite familiar with (regular readers of the forum can probably work this out) for example, over 30 man-YEARS of development has gone into it! Data-logging companies are not a charity and motor racing is not a cheap hobby.

Personally I'd take that question directly to the relevent company's technical support line or start a new thread for it.

Aha Rubinho, I believe you should know an old Cambridge Regional College friend of mine called Chris Sewell, he works for your organisation.

Thanks for adding support to my comments, personally I am in agreement with you on both accounts.....
