Greatest Driver
If you put all the greatest drivers past and today in a race who do you think would win?

Jim Clark - pole, win, fastest lap (He did that 11 times in 77 starts - the perfect race)

I'd say Jim Clark. From memory, I believe he has the highest win ration of any F1 driver ever.

eeeek - what era car and what track???
Senna - even if he didn't know the car or the track, he would still drive his balls off .. Clarke and TGF would be good, but not until they took a few laps to get used to the machinery and layout, Senna would be on it, straight out of the box. |

Alain Prost for mine. 51 wins & 4 World Championships rate pretty highly.

If they would be driving Grand Prix of Belgrade, yes I'd vote for him, but since they're not, my vote goes to Senna. |

You will have to be more specific. Anyone who raced after about 1980 would be a specialist and would only be fast on an F1 track in a car of the type he was used to driving. (That is, put TGF in a touring car or a rally car and he'd be lost.) But put my nomination, Mario Andretti in anything with wheels on it and he'd drive it to victory. After all, he has been a champion in everything from stock cars on a dirt track to Formula One. Second I'd choose Jim Clark as I recall Tim D saying that he was also very experienced in many different kinds of cars.

As far as Fangio's percentage stats, remember that by the time the F1 championship started he already had vast experience and had won many races of Grand Prix significance over the pre-WW2 years as well as in the 40s. Jim Clark started as a rookie and had to learn the ropes.
My answers, though, would be: Early F1: Fangio Mid 60s type: Clark Ground Effects: Senna could have driven those Turbos: Senna 89-93 Hi-Tec cars: Any Monkey Today's cars: Senna Today's Indy Cars: Senna or Montoya 60s type US cars: Calrk or Senna Touring cars: Montoya Early Toruign Cars: Clark |

I'm with Bononi.
Tazio Nuvolari. The greatest there ever was. Right behind him, Juan-Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Ayrton Senna, Jim Clark, Rudolf Caracciola. Honourable mentions: Alain Prost, Bernd Rosemeyer, Niki Lauda, Michael Schumacher, Alberto Ascari. The above mentioned are/were all complete genius. There are a thousand and one who are utterly awesome, but either are too specialised or too mood-driven to be sensational. Case in point? Carlos Reutemann. On his day, he could be the greatest on four wheels. When he was "off", he was lacklustre in a way that was tragic to watch. Gilles Villeneuve, much as we all love him, was also flawed in that he wanted to lead every corner, and did not strategise enough to actually win the races and the championships he perhaps deserved. |

Senna Senna Senna
If he hadn't of died & stayed in the Williams until 1997, he would be a 6 time World Champion. End of debate. |

Well, i have secretly always been a bit of a jim clark fan, but being only a meager 15 years old, i never had the privelege to see him race. although my father did, and from what he says he was a very skilled man

MS has got the art of F1 to such a point now that he's making it LOOK easy - now that's the mark of greatness. It's easy to claim that he's got the best machinery at his disposal - but he made it that way, he attracted the team around him.
Also, I feel that he has very much reinvented the standards by which drivers are judged - certainly in terms of fitness, also in terms of relentlessness of pace when needed. The first of these points, together with the obvious differences in technology, make it very difficult to compare drivers from different eras. I love F1 and hardly need add my admiration for Senna - but for a contrast look back to Senna/Prost years, where Senna did not always prevail by any means. For sheer dominance of the game from every angle politics, team-building, car development, strategy AND pure racing it's pretty hard to argue against Michael Schumacher. Championship number five on the way (?)...Three on the trot for the same team(?)... Double championships with different teams (one of them was Bennetton for chrisakes!)... Even if you want to reduce the argument to pure driving, you've only got to look at his record at "drivers" circuits - Monaco, Spa, anywhere it rains... to see that it stands up pretty well. And, to anticipate another counter-argument, I believe that the competition is much BETTER in the modern era - the money has never been better, drivers have never started younger. |

Glen is absolutely correct. Schui has dominated the sport for the last decade. People often say that the competition has been week. But which do you think is harder
1- having Prost as a teammate in equal cars 2- or having Mika or Jaques as an oponent in a car over 1 sec a lap faster!(ie 97,98) I agree that different drivers would excel in different eras, but if were speaking of 90's onwards then Schui is the only option. P.S Senna owned the late 80's though. |

Senna by all means. Though it will be a great battle between him, TGF, Prost, and Stewart.

And they both have the same Last name.... Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve..... True racers to the end..... :P |
