Thanks for that, Muzza! Great photography... looks almost as if the car was standing still. Hope you enjoyed your weekend in Long Beach!

Name your favorite driver and I will post another photo.

I took just too many pictures last weekend...

Macdaddy, thanks for the kind words, but actually I messed up with the pictures when posting them. It seems that the Ten Tenths page somehow compresses them, so they don't look as sharp as they are (and I am a poor photographer anyway).

So, who is your favorite driver/team?

Appearently the system will only accept 400 X 400 resolution images. My guess is that it has a program that compresses the pictures to the proper allowed size.

If you re-size them yourself before posting, the sharpness will actually be better. That has been my experience, anyway.

Muzza, send me a pm regarding the US mail.

Adrian Fernandez at the hairpin

Botsquad,

I missed the Celebrity Race because I was in the paddock at the time. So, since I don't have a picture of Patrick Stewart, let's see one of Adrian Fernandez, another man with his own entreprise...

Great pictures. That must be one of the big bonuses of going to a street race over an oval.

Thanks, Raven. Hey, why am I the only one posting pictures of the Long Beach GP? Where are/were the other Ten Tenths members?

If there is a drawback associated to safety in motorsport, it is the fact that taking good pictures has become quite difficult! Spectators are located much further away from the track than, say, twenty years ago (what about forty years ago?).

Also, tracks are surrounded by very high fences nowadays, and this really puts me mad... Thank you, greed-driven litigation lawyers. Thank you, politically correct media that cannot understand that motorsport is dangerous, and will continue to be. By watching a race live I am always assuming I can get hurt. Seriously hurt. I assume that my friends that came to a race with me can get hurt. But not everybody thinks the same - so, instead of staying home and watch it on TV, these fans go to the track and hire a lawyer, just in case.

Any injury associated to racing is disturbing. Any death - a driver, a marshal, a spectator, a photographer - is tough to accept. But although I think this is unavoidable, not everybody shares the same opinion.

Well, let me go back to the photography subject (on which I am no expert whatsoever). Some thoughts:

- I am not fond of ovals. Absolutely not - but I've been to some anyway. Taking good pictures in an oval track is very tricky. A good experiment for oval races is playing with pictures with blurred background.
- whatever the circuit, you need a tele-objective lens. I would say that 300-mm has become a minimum. 100 to 300-mm zoom lenses, are great very flexible tools. You can take just about all sorts of pictures with them, but I do not recommend to use lenses with aperture lower than 1/5.6 (the lower the aperture index, the less light hits the film, the lesser the picture quality).
- if you can afford, buy a 500 or 600-mm, aperture 1/4. This will let you take pictures of Spa from Luxembourg, but it will cost you some USD 2,500.00 too.
- a good set is a fixed 50-mm, a 28 to 105-mm zoom and a 100 to 300-mm zoom. And the 600-mm above for those who drive Bentleys.
- use GOOD film (obvious, but I had to say it). Don't buy just any . Equally important, ask for a GOOD developing paper. It is more expensive but it is worth.
- wake up early and walk the track up and down trying to find a spot close to the track and without a fence up on your nose. Be creative. Sometimes I bring a ladder with me (in Laguna Seca this helps a lot). I have climbed on top of trucks and on trees to take good pictures...
- wake up early and take a good spot at the grandstand!
- in long circuits, like Elkhart Lake, take a bike with you, so you can move yourself around the track faster. Use a , cheap bike though - bicycles are known for their strange habit of mysteriously migrating to some far, unknown place during race weekends, never to return.
- if someone at the track calls you freak, or nerd, or nuts, or , or , call YOUR lawyer!

And there goes a Paul Tracy shot.

Cheers,

Muzza

Hi, Sato san,

This is what happened: all CART drivers were supposed to take part in the autograph session on Friday afternoon, but Kenny Brack and Scott Dixon could not attend, so the organizers filled their places with Daziel and a manager of one of the teams (I do not remember the latter's name).

Unfortunately I do not have a picture of Daziel's car to post.

And there goes Shinji Nakano locking up his front left wheel...
