Anyone know of a treatment/method of cleaning galvenised trailers?
I have just bought a tilt bed tri-axle Brian James trailer secondhand only a year old but it has been used up and down the motorway and is a bit (read very) soiled with road grime, anyone know a way to restore/clean the galvenised metal as it looks a lot duller than my much older other Brian James trailer?

just use a power hose on it. I dont think it will ever shine again really...

yeah I remember now, the Zinc creates a impervious layer (dont damage this layer, its zinc oxide) to Oxygen hence dramatically slowing down the corrossion also zinc is a scarficial metal for the steel

Thanks guys, it just looks a bit dull, great trailer though and takes minutes to load as opposed to half to 3/4 of an hour with the old one messing changing wheels etc and it is rated to carry 2750kgs!

ours is still silver . . . .but dulling.
I'll avoid giving it a coat of hammerite as long as possible as I'm sure it'll make ot look even worse in the long run !!! |

Al, get yourself some alloy wheel cleaner and spray your trailer a bit at a time with it and jet wash of ,it is how I cleaned mine with no problems.pete

I've got some concentrated road film remover that is used to clean our trucks. It is excellent on aluminium but I haven't tried it on zinc coated metal. It is so good that it took the paint off my my wife's car.

Ahh TFR - does wonders doesn't it. When we bought my wife's Zafira, I had it treated with Diamond Brite - and it shone like new, right up to the day I washed it in Traffic Film Remover, and when it dried... dull.... no shine!
Thanks to T-Cut, AutoGlym, and a buffer! Al, what you really need is DJInvicta to come around with a couple of tubes of Solvol and a toothbrush...... Be good to see him do some work. |

Its 4.8 metre by 2.44 metre wide flat bed with three axles. Proper bit of kit.

Powermax 3 by autoglym used 50:50 with water. Spray it on leave for five mins and blast off. If its still dull use again and use a stiff brush.
It works great on aluminium castings as well like gearboxes. |

the trouble is your speeding up the rate at which your corroding the trailer as your removing the impervious layer of zinc oxide. its the zinc oxide that gives the trailer a dull finish

well it is shifting some of it but like hard work! Looking at it again I think a good steam cleaning may be worth trying for as I think the dulling is actually caked on road and diesel muck as it has been towed behind a messy old diesel 4 x 4.

Much has been made of the Zinc being a sacrificial coating, but it is the bond between the Zinc and the substrate which is of most importance. To this end a gentle shotblasting gives a good surface to prime and paint but it must be asap before oxidisation starts again. If you get the paint to adhere properly then it suspends the sacrificial process and should last forever!!!!!!
