South Africa hosted the soccer world cup last year, and with great success. So South Africa hosting F1 shouldn't be too much of a problem for Bernie to sort out. Only problem would be that South Africa didn't come out of the world cup with an entirely balanced bank account.

I believe that security is also an issue.

Didn't seem to be an issue tbh.

Like most countries and cities, there are always going to be areas that you stay away from. The last two GPs of this season give two opposites in that respect.

It does look like it might be a nice circuit! Does anyone who knows the area want give some info on the elevation changes? Hard to tell from that video.

On page two down force posted a 3D rendering of the elevation changes, so that might help a bit... during practice for the Indian GP the announcers mentioned I think 150 feet of elevation change

From the various bits I've seen/heard, it's between 150 and 200 feet between the lowest and highest points. That's not bad at all!

There are a couple of simulations I've seen (including the one posted in this thread), and the best indicator of the change in level is to look at the buildings on that downhill run. The angle as the floors go by gives the impression that it's a pretty serious slope.

I got the direction wrong in this post but commented on the what the simulations show as Turns 3 uphill to T4.

I know that part of New Jersey quite well. It's about 3' on the Hudson and up to 160' on the FDR Blvd.

The simulation is deceptive, in that Manhatten isn't that close but it will make a spectacular backdrop. Fort Lee and Union City form one massive conurbation; the Union City GP sounds good to me.

Whatever, it's Bernie's dream coming true.

henners88 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
A question came up elsewhere about rental prices around the New Jersey track and expectations. A chap who lives in New York mentioned that in Monaco residents rent out their balconies for as much as $50k during a race weekend if it has a good view. He suggested maybe residents in New Jersey could do the same but expect around $15k, once again if it has a good view. Obviously with 20 odd people cramming onto the balcony it doesn't sound so far fetched to me, but a Romanian chap who has never lived in New York suggested you'd only get around $1.5k also much to his amusement. Any thoughts on the desirability of such an idea and is it realistic?

Its certainly an exciting prospect having the race so near New York and its something that has been pushed for for a very long time.

It's NOT going to be as lacking as Monaco in terms of overtaking.

In terms usable racing room, the New Jersey course is much wider. The lap is 60% longer, which gives length for more "straights" of decent size. Three of the straights are a good bit longer than the longest flat-out section at Monaco. And that run from the hairpin up to the final two corners looks to be around 1200m (~0.75 of a mile). Where the cars turn off the top of the Palisades, I think you could have a shot similar to what we saw with the cars turning off Ocean and heading down the hill at Long Beach, just the hill in New Jersey is even bigger.

I was just thinking, and one way to allow more people in the area to watch, and at (hopefully) reduced price, would be to have jumbo-trons in at least one of the stadiums in East Rutherford. They could also do this in some of the other arenas in the area (June isn't basketball or hockey season, so Madison Square Garden wouldn't have game conflicts).

I may be dreaming in this case, but I know other racing series have done this in the past, and I think it could be a very good and lucrative idea.

And here's a virtual look at the new circuit. What do you make of it?

http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com...ewis-hamilton/

Looks like a power circuit. You'll need some good traction, but it's mostly more Monza-like rather than quick straight, big stop.

Having a strong engine should help, but as with many street circuits, the biggest factor may well be surface condition, and thus how well you are able to put down the power you have.

I'll put together a more detailed, technical look at the New Jersey circuit for the "Tilke-Designed Circuits" thread.

as has been suggested by others, from that video i find to hard to imagine there being enough room for 100K fans sitting or walking around.

next to the track are hills and trees presumable to shelter the freeways. off track it looks residential so you will have some (maybe lots of) rooftops but those will be private deals so no money for ticket sales to the promoters.

im not so sure there looks to be much open space in the track infield.

Purist's suggestion that there be some screens set up in nearby by stadiums is a really cool idea but ultimately how do you convince someone to watch something on a screen (even a big screen) when they can watch at home?

if anyone can confirm, but i have a hard time believing that there are so many open line of sight views of Manhattan from this side of the river. from what i know and can imagine about New York/Jersey real estate market i would think that any opening along the river would already have a more profitable building already enjoying that view.

want it to succeed but i all honesty feeling kind of cynical about this one.
