Overseas We Go Again V2.1
Speedcafe are reporting two jaunts overseas for the Virgin Supercars Championship next year.
Take your choice of Indonesia or Thailand, for your overseas holiday next year with some supercar racing thrown in while you are throwing up, getting some cheap dental work done or your lovely lady has some bodywork updated to your latest specs! Looks like Winton was so yesterday! Interesting times ahead. |

In the past, news such as this would have us stampeding to the travel agents. and flogging webjet and trivago half to death.
Unfortunately now we just say "I'll believe it when I see it..." And book Benalla anyway... |

Let's see on the Supercars magic carpet ride we have been to Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and America, all promised big things but delivered SFA in reality.
Do we really want to lose wonderful Winton from the calendar? Perhaps a round in the Antarctica, when we go with the turbo's in Gen 2? Best starting filling up at BP and get those velocity points for the Asian experience! |

A Australian Championship dumps a Australian race/round for 2 Overseas races that only line the pockets of the suits in Supercars Australia.......So much for the fans.

A fair portion of the money earned by VASC for these offshore races gets distributed back into the teams.

Is anyone expecting a different outcome this time around, to the previous attempts at taking the show overseas?

If they are going to burn Winton to chase short term cash and then try and bully the Vic government into a regional street then this organisation has fallen below the standards that I hold them in ............ And that's low |

At present, it appears that the business case for both BAC and VASC to hold an event at Winton is weak at best.
BAC uses the takings from track hire and every other event held there, to scrape their profit margins off the floor, off the back of the yearly VASC visit. Both parties are calling upon the Victorian Government to chip in to ensure the event's long-term viability. |

Are you suggesting that VASC is trying to "bully" the Vic govt into a regional street race? Where did that idea come from? |

Approximately how does this look under Archer? Quote:
You know kind of like how V8SA burned Eastern Creek at every opportunity to leverage the ultra successful Homebush street race with NSW Government. And we saw how this worked out in the long run. For all that Winton has done for Australian motorsport, for V8SA to use them and leverage then off them I think is weak. |

There certainly WAS talk of a possible Geelong street race at one point but that has gone all quiet for some time now with the (then) mayor saying a definite "no" in regard to that idea. I don't see them "leveraging" Winton - also based on the other speed cafe article re Winton's position, there is clearly a process that Winton/VASC/Vic govt are negotiating in regard to the race. If they all get that sorted, then that may limit the possible number of races in Asia or lead to a need to have more rounds in the series than is currently the case. Regardless of what happens in Asia (or not) with Sandown on limited time, I would think that all parties would see benefit in getting a deal done for Winton. |

That's 40% split between 26 RECs.
All sentiments aside, it needs to make commercial sense to hold an event at a track. Neither BAC, nor VASC want to be running something at a loss, just for the sake of it. As it stands, they are both relying on the VicGov to kick the tin, to ensure the event is sustainable for all parties. |

The speedcafe article says otherwise, the comment being they need to stand on their own 2 feet, ie if one fails the other can still continue, and therefore not requiring to be back to back. Although you would expect some cost avoidance by doing it back to back

Also the Victorian government already pays Supercars about $1mill to race at a street track-Albert Park. Why would they double down for what would be a tenth rate cousin? |
