#54 Doran on pole at Mid-Ohio-Why?

Check it out: Grand-Am.com
How could such a horrendous DP beat all of the season-dominant GT's? Their engine program hasn't changed, so could such a horrendous car like this have an aerodynamic advantage over the other cars?
What are your thoughts?

I'm not surprised, as Mid-Ohio is a technical track where the higher hp of the GTS cars is less of an advantage.

The Doran-Chevy DP burns every car up, in GA anyway, on fresh tires. The Brumos cars are better long run cars. I know you hate to think of this, but the DPs are faster than the GTs most of the time. The Trans Am cars are able to pass them, but it seems to be at the cost of an engine.

Don't let Stu Hayner or Tommy Riggins, hear you say that!
To me, it is amazing to see a 5 year old T/A Mustang, eating a brand-spankin' new DPs lunch! Bad move! Thanks again, France Family.}=-(

wibblywobbly, I walked Mid-Ohio when I was there for the Runoffs last fall, and must say that this is the single most complex track I have ever seen. It doesn't come across well on TV (what does?), but there are dozens of transitions in track surface, camber, elevation, and direction per lap that make this track a diabolical nightmare for driver and engineer alike. As good as a T/A car is, their weight, CG (vertical & longitudinal), relative lack of downforce and antiquated suspension place them at a marked disadvantage to the DPs. What they lack in mechanical grip they can't really make up for with their extra hundred hp.

That's not to say they can't get lucky, but I'm just not surprised at the outcome. No disrespect intended for Stu and Tommy, they ran a hellofa race, but IMO once the DPs are fully sorted the old T/A cars won't stand a chance at this type of venue.
