Incident throughout? Were we watching the same race? Long spells of bugger all happening punctuated by the occasional cockup was what I saw. I don't think there was anything at all of note before the first round of stops was there? Not even the usual first lap chaos at the first corner or hairpin.

Just a 4.
Not much really happens at Monaco. I watched the race delayed in between the Nürburgring 24 Hours and the Indy 500. Anything more than 5 would be unfair when compared to the 2 other races; on the other side: I didn't fall asleep even though I had been awake for about 30 hours already. |

Its impressive to watch the precision with which drivers can thread the needle without (mostly) clattering the barriers.....but it isn't a race, is it? When pitstop strategy is the only thing that decides a race, its misses the point, for me. I normally mark fairly generously, but gave it a 3 as it reflects how much it engaged me.

Boring, I gave it a 3 as I didn't have the heart to give a 0 !. The only exiting part IMHO were the "incidents" glad I didn't waste my time watching it live it reminds me of slot car racing !

Sorry, but I quite liked it, mainly because Lewis was stuck down the field, and Seb was extending his Championship lead. Good to see LH struggle with a car that Bottas handled well enough.
Well! What did you expect from me? |

Well what do you expect from Monaco? Anyone who thinks they will see motor 'racing' is bound to be disappointed on such a circuit with modern F1 cars. It is however visually nice to watch when compared with the Tilkedromes that host too many of todays races.
Now the sight of a 250F Maserati ......................... |

I love watching Monaco, for anyone that has been fortunate enough to visit its a beautiful place.. Walking around the streets that make up the circuit it baffles the mind how anyone can race F1 cars there..
I gave it a 6... |

That's one way of looking at it, literally.

Watching on TV (which I make a point of doing every year) it was a boring race, but having been there for a Grand Prix (as long ago as 1983), if I did wear a hat I would have to take it off to the drivers fro man-handling a modern day F1 car around the streets... |

I would go for an eight, because that's how much I enjoyed it. It is one of the circuits where Formula 1 looks really difficult and a bit scary. It also looks so fast, which is ironic considering that it has such a low average speed. Monte Carlo always makes me feel a bit dizzy watching it and by watching all the driver's inputs, as a spectator you have a much better impression of the work they're doing than you do at many other circuits.
I don't really compare it to the excellent Indy 500 later in the day because both races were different and that was to be expected. |

I guess it depends whether your watching it to see a race or just to see drivers expertly (mostly) negotiating the streets of Monaco at speed.

Yes, the same race at a wide, open circuit would have not scored anything near an 8. I am completely irrational with my rating because sometimes I will score a race a 5 if I think it is okay and about average (trying to be mathematical about it) and yet this got an 8 because it was 8 in the enjoyment stakes for me. I just enjoyed watching it.

Horses for courses. Personally, I watch to see a race. Cars following each other around at speed, no matter how expertly, just doesn't ring my bell.

I'd fight to keep Monaco on the calendar. And I'm also strenuously opposed to reverse grids and all that artificial jazz. But I saw that race, I saw a three. I'm not going to divine excitement from it that just wasn't there. Whenever I watch Monaco throughout the years, I have the Indy 500 on the brain. It's the prospect of the 500 that makes Monaco easy to watch. I don't know how healthy that is for F1 in Monaco but there you go.

Frankly I think we're conditioned to consider Monaco as 'special'. No doubt that it takes great skill to race there and indeed to win it. I guess I'd miss the loss of Monaco as an 'event' if it disappeared (which I'm certain money will always ensure it won't), but I'd get over it quickly enough.....

It could do with more moves, though. Still, Pérez put a move on Vandoorne into Turn 1. Barcelona wasn't far from full of overtaking, but was seen as a very good race due to the intense and race-long Hamilton and Vettel duel. Last edited by Born Racer; 3 Jun 2017 at 15:07. |
