Race 5 - Classic Group One (continued)
92 is the E30 320 of Daniel Smoughton who finished 9th. The next shot shows the great early dice towards the back of the field between Brian Goodwin (68 - Ford Fiesta) and Chris Marsh (98 - Capri). The Fiesta has just outbraked the Capri to get ahead, but they swapped places a couple of times. Unfortunately, I believe that the Fiesta either had a moment out of my sight, or had a problem which meant that he had dropped 30 secs back from Marsh by the end and they finished 11th and 12th respectively. Meanwhile, Lucock (14) had also got ahead of Roper (54) who had also dropped behind Anthony S A (44) and now had his sights on Tim S A. However, Tim, who had established himself at the front of the SD1 battle had started to drive away, had more than the measure of the Dolomite and continued to pull away to finish a fine 4th, with the Triumph 17 secs back. 37 is Matthew Irons in the other E21 323i who finished 7th which included an earlier spin in the chicane. 71 was the Alfa Romeo GTV of Anthony Welsh who had a rather lonely race circulating at the back. Alan Jenkins had also brought the CSL up into contention with Rover SD1s and I hope that I am not doing Alan Roper an injustice when I say that his entry to the Russell chicane regularly looked fraught with too much late braking and lock ups. It happened once too often with an overly ambitious move when he tried to recapture his position from the BMW with the result that we see here. Roper retired to the pits but with only a lap or two left, Jenkins continued, albeit with some expensive panel damage and finished 8th having lost position to Irons who had avoided the collision - see pic.

I think that Tim said that it was Tony's first time out in this car, so presumably a recent purchase from Holton, Peter?

Quite possibly, I saw it on Sunday evening and was told it had just been re sprayed.
A bit more history. Unless I miss my guess the Capri is an ex Malcolm Best car. |

Great report and photos as usual John, to add a bit more info...
When we looked at Tony's Dolomite in the paddock after the Post Historic race there was no sign of any contact suggesting his spin was unassisted. His climb back through the field to take the win netted him the Post Historic Driver of the Day trophy. In the Pre93 race Dean's driving was too 'enthusiastic' but in his defence after the race he found he had oil on his rear tyres caused by a leaking sump gasket. The CoC had a quiet word with him about it. Dad's Rover is indeed Peter Holton's old red car. This was his fourth time out in it but the first in the new paint. Malc Best's Capri was badly damaged at Mallory when Malc spun it into the tyres some years ago. He's almost finished rebuilding it and will be back out in it soon. Chris Marsh races the car in photo and is Malc's nephew, the car's colour scheme is a mirror image of Malc's. Tim |

I think Malc had two in the same colour scheme at one time.

I seem to recall one heading straight into the tyres at turn 1 at Lydden some years ago. I thought that was Malc, so either a) I'm wrong, b) the accident was Lydden and not Mallory, or c) it was the other one so we've accounted for both.
Malc unusually would run the 2.8i rather than the 3.0. Can't tell from TSL what this was entered as but the programme might help explain if it's a new car or a rebuild. S. |

Thanks to Chris (BM Racer) for the pics!
I'm about to select the pics for Race 6 - Classic Thunder, and they should be up later this morning. |

Race 6 - Classic Thunder (+ Blue Oval saloons)
24 starters; 19 finishers.
It looked as though we were in a for a great lead battle between the 2.7 litre, 327bhp Lotus Sunbeam of Josh Ronchetti (32) and the turbocharged Mitsubishi Starion of Neil Philpotts (74), these two capable of lapping 2.5 secs quicker than anybody else. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Ronchetti streaked away to build up a several car lengths lead by the end of the first lap. Philpotts overcame a slower start to extract himself from the pursuing pack and gave chase. Over the next 3 laps he gradually eroded Ronchetti's lead and got within a couple of car lengths of 'The Bullet' but we were denied what could have been a great dust up when the Starion's turbo decided not to function properly (or at all!). Philpotts soldiered on but he drifted back through the field to finish, a no doubt disconsolate, 12th, but having put up fastest race lap on lap 4 of 1.15.011. Ronchetti went on to win this 15 minute (12 laps) race by over half a minute. There were some good dices down the field including that for 2nd place once Philpotts had dropped back. The first pic shows the early battle for what was then 3rd between Craig Rainer's Escort Mk11 (23) and Pier Grange's mighty 5.6 litre Ford Sierra XR8 (47), the bigger car getting ahead after a while. The second shows the Starion when he was still in high speed pursuit of Ronchetti. 12 is Demetris Neophytou's Fiesta Mk1 which finished 13th. I met Adam Croft in the Paddock earlier on in the day, and he was kind enough to talk to me with some enthusiasm about his quick Peugeot 205Gti (73). Unfortunately, he failed to finish. I find it difficult to capture a good shot of Ronchetti's car. Whether the colour combination fools the lens (or me!), I don't know, but of the many I took of the LS during this race, this seems to be the best. Finally, a pic of Andy Williams in the Sierra Sapphire (24) getting a bit crossed up. When Rainer succumbed to Grange (see above), he was then caught by Williams and they had a titanic struggle until Rainer was again demoted to finally finish 4th. Williams, having got the better of the Escort the went after the XR8, and crossed the finishing line, less than half a second behind to finish a strong3rd. As you will know from another thread, I didn't attend the second day of this meeting, so that concludes my input! |
